What Is A Partial Hospitalization Rehab Program

3 min read

Partial hospitalization rehab programs also referred to as PHPs, are day programs that provide intensive rehabilitation and treatment for addiction and behavioral health issues. These programs differ from inpatient programs in that they do not require overnight stays. However, they offer a lot more time in treatment than traditional outpatient programs.

There are some alcohol rehab and inpatient centers do offer partial hospitalization programs as a part of a complete spectrum treatment plan. Some PHPs are offered by hospitals that may have an outpatient and inpatient program for addiction treatment also.

Patients who are in partial hospitalization programs are medically monitored while they are in treatment, and they are also participants in multiple therapies that are backed by science. The goals of these programs are to provide complete and comprehensive care for mental health issues like addiction while also allowing patients to enjoy the freedom of living their lives outside of the rehab program.

What Are The Most Common Addiction Treatment Programs In PHPs?

Typically, partial hospitalization programs are operated by certified addiction counselors or medical staff. These programs utilize several types of therapies for addiction treatment. It is important to understand that addiction is a mental disorder that is multifaceted.

Behavioral therapy is one of the primary treatment methods for addiction. CBT, or cognitive-behavioral therapy, works with patients to discover the negative thought patterns they have that has lead to unhealthy behaviors. DBT, or dialectical behavior therapy, helps patients better regulate their emotions while learning coping skills.

Individual counseling is another treatment method that is offered in partial hospitalization programs. With this type of treatment, patients work very closely with a therapist. This gives the patients the opportunity to delve deeper into the issues that surround their substance abuse. Individuals are allowed to discuss their progress while also setting goals.

Group therapy is ideal for patients who are more receptive to having the opportunity to relate to their peers who are also struggling with the same issues. These groups are usually run by one therapist, and the groups allow patients to interact with each other and develop relationships that are hopefully positive and long-lasting.

What Type Of Individual May Or May Not Benefit From A PHP?

Partial hospitalization programs are a level above from intensive outpatient programs. They are a level below residential or inpatient treatment programs. For example, partial hospitalization programs can be used as an excellent transition from an inpatient program and before they enter into an outpatient program.

Day programs can be very effective for those who are leaving a 30-day program. Short-term residential programs can lay the foundation for the road to recovery, but they usually do not offer patients enough time to heal completely. In simpler terms, partial hospitalization programs continue to build on what patients learned while they were in residential treatment and continue the recovery process.

There are some individuals who may not benefit from the treatment methods offered at partial hospitalization programs. The patient’s home life may play a large role in their success during treatment. For example, if family members encourage negative habits, it can be difficult for the person to live at home while they are in treatment.

Partial hospitalization rehab programs are geared to be used as a step down from a residential treatment program. This way, patients can recover slowly and at their own pace and return to normal life.
